Spooktacular

  SPOOKY

This week, the students will create a “Spooktacular” story focusing on the development of character, setting, and plot. The first part is to write a detailed “spooky story”. This must contain all of the elements of a detailed story that we have been discussing in class. The second part involves creating a pumpkin to go along with the story.

(WRITTEN IN CLASS) SPOOKY STORY:

Using the “Scary Story Characteristics Web”, the students will write a story that will include the following: characters, setting, a problem/plot, suspense/danger, and a solution.

Characters:

·        described in detail using descriptive language

·        the reader must know how the characters look, think, act, and feel.

Setting:

·        must include how it looks, what you can feel, what you can see, and what you may hear.

Problem:

·   the problem must be clear to the reader, and it must be solved.

Suspense:

·  create suspense by dropping hints to what will happen next. Create danger/obstacles for you character(s).

(CREATED AT HOME) PUMPKIN:

Part two of this project involves creating a pumpkin to go along with the student’s “Spooktacular” story. It may be decorated any way the student chooses. We encourage the students to be creative, unique, and have fun. Some ideas include: painting the pumpkins, using glitter, sand or jewels, using stickers or styrofoam pieces, using sticks, fabric or clothing. The pumpkin will be completed at home and is due on Wednesday, October 28th.

On Wednesday, October 28th we will share our spooky stories and pumpkins with Mrs. Serlin’s classes. All stories and pumpkins will be judged by the students and the teachers on this day. Awards will be given for the most ominous, unusual, clever, scariest, weirdest, fanciest, and cutest pumpkins. In addition, the students will choose one “Spooktacular” paper from each team that best exemplifies the characteristics of a scary story. This is an exciting activity that enhances student’s descriptive writing and allows an outlet for students to demonstrate their understanding of literary elements.
